Bucerias

Get the Best of Both Worlds in Bucerias

It is easy to get into the spirit of Mexico. Great food, beautiful beaches, alluring customs and warmhearted people define the culture in this markedly distinctive country. Bucerias is a only 20 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport, as well as only 15 minutes or so from Sayulita, making it a popular vacation destination. The Riviera Nayarit is an amazing place, and Bucerias has a lot to offer.

Like any major tourist city, Puerto Vallarta has scores of nightclubs and dance bars to keep the nights wild, and Bucerias is only 15-20 minutes away, making the party life easy to attain.
However, not all people like the clamor of the big city, and some prefer a slower paced vacation.  Just a short drive north though, is Bucerias – which offers everything, including entertainment, that Puerto Vallarta does but at a slower pace and with a more convivial attitude.

Bucerias, like most western coast communities, was a fishing town at its inception in the early twentieth century. The name Bucerias translates to “divers” in Spanish; harkening back to the town’s beginning when a great deal of the people supplemented their incomes diving the shallows of Banderas Bay for oysters. Bucerias is well known for its oysters and many of the restaurants and street merchants offer fresh seafood tacos. Fishing is still a driving force of the regional economy as there are several professional guides in town. Huge sailfish and sharks are routinely caught in the bay.

Bucerias is still adorned with cobblestone roads and street vendors of old-fashioned Mexican villages. However, this town of over 20,000 individuals mixes totally contemporary comforts with ancient customs and the slower, more leisurely Mexican attitude. Bucerias has a ritzy, all-inclusive jumbo resort that rivals any in Puerto Vallarta, and there are even a few quality theaters that do a fine job of presenting international plays . Clubs in Bucerias are also just as fun as those in the big cities, but they carry a more relaxed attitude and far fewer people to contend with.

Along with the exclusive hotels and trendy bars, Bucerias has a cultured aspect that is often unseen. Artists gather at Bucerias and the community hosts a big weekly art carnival. Many galleries tout their wares at the market – which promotes emerging Mexican artists who are often having their work displayed for the first time.
