Community Service on the Riviera Nayarit

Many wonderful people help out with community service on the Riviera Nayarit, and  if there is one thing I love to write about is people that help people by doing community service; paying it forward. Paying it forward is the best way to allow your grace to shine out from within.  This is exactly how these two folks live their lives.
This week I would like to honor Bucerias Mexico residents Harold and Sue Sokolove  for their Riviera Nayarit community service endeavors.
Harold and Sue moved to Bucerias about 10 years ago. Harold and Sue lived in Waco Texas (a small town of 12,000 people) where they resided for 22 years before relocating to Bucerias.  Harold was a USPS mail carrier and Sue worked as an industrial engineer for the M&M Mars Candy Company. Harold was also a volunteer for the Waco Fire Department as well as in Iowa for 17 years.
Sue and Harold had spent many years vacationing in Puerto Vallarta and fell in love with the PV  and Riviera Nayarit area like so many of us have. Harold states, “Retirement meant that we could go anywhere we wanted. We met lots of people who vacationed here at the same time, and who were also planning to move or already had moved here.” Sue says she loves to live here “Because something unexpected always happens.” And isn’t that the truth!
Harold told me that Sue speaks Spanish quite well, however, also commenting that he is too lazy to practice, but can minimally converse because he took a couple of courses from Sean at the former BBCC. (Bucerias Bilingual Community Center in Bucerias.) They were also volunteers in the Waco Texas city government and also volunteered with a major Waco charity bike ride in Texas. The energy of volunteering and paying it forward followed them to Bucerias Mexico.

Harold was the former president of the Amigos de Bucerias, (2006-2008), and the original person for the PEACE adoption table at Mega (the former BBCC). They currently work with the Bucerias Children’s Library, Manos de Amor (Bucerias orphanage), Paraiso Felino Cat Shelter, and help with street repairs and clean-ups in Col. Las Palmas and Dorada, the reforestation project and the monthly Bucerias beach clean-ups. Sue also is a member of the Beta Sigma Phi service sorority.Since their relocation Harold has been a volunteer firefighter/bombero for the Proteccion Civil Bahia de Banderas and the State of Nayarit, as well has Sue from time to time over the years.

Bringing in Medical Supplies
Approximately 5 years ago they met Dianne Deboer who is a Critical Care nurse in a Calgary Canada hospital who had purchased a condo at the Aqua in the Flamingos development Nuevo Vallarta. Harold knew from working with the Proteccion Civil that there was always a need for first aid, medical supplies and equipment for their ambulances. Dianne had explained that she was always throwing away good medical supplies at her hospital. (Which I am sure is standard Canadian protocol.) From that point on Dianne began to bring medical supplies every time she came down and Harold and Sue were able to distribute them to the paramedics of Proteccion Civil, the local hospitals and Centro Salud (health centers), which were very well received. Harold tells me, “On one occasion, I arranged the donation to be covered by a Mexican newspaper reporter. I sent Dianne a copy of the newspaper story and she posted it on the hospital wall. Soon, other nurses were salvaging what would otherwise be thrown away under normal hospital policy.” Over the years, this is how Harold and Sue met the directors of the Proteccion Civil Nayarit.
How do you find a Free Fire Truck?
The current director, Maritn Tapia Miranda contacted them about 3 months ago, explaining that he had a friend in San Hose California who was a retired firefighter who bought and sold used fire trucks. He explained that his friend offered the PCE (Proteccion Civil Estadal) a used fire truck for free and only charging for the equipment that it carries which were the hoses, nozzles, ladders, power generator and other miscellaneous tools. Martin contacted them about “supporting” the campaign to get the fire truck for the newly opened PC base in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, who at the time only had one ambulance and one water tanker. Harold said, “The amount of money he needed was not out-of-line for what he told me came with the fire truck (a 1972 pumper), so after a little discussion we said OK.” Some of the moneys they collected were from people who donate money to them, so in turn can be distributed in lump sums to local community service groups and charities that have projects that need funding. They also received permission from the local Fire Chief to offer fire truck rides as a means to raise more funds for the fire department that were needed to purchase supplies and also for maintenance. It has all come together and the fire truck is now stationed in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and is also available to respond anywhere in the municipality. WOW! This is how you get a fire truck donated!
Harold and Sue keep busy so “We can really enjoy the times when we’re not busy. We have a good time; it keeps us from being bored and we hope it makes the community service organizations more successful.” When they do have time to relax they enjoy going to their newer home of 3 years in Guadalajara. They have some new projects coming up this high season and it will be interesting to see what develops!
Kudos to you, Harold and Sue Sokolove for holding the energy to help others and showing all of us through their example how Riviera Nayarit community service (or no matter where you are) can make a difference in the community. Thank you so much for all you both do for our communities here in Mexico. You are an amazing example of Grace in action.

Bucerias Mexico Non Profit Community News

Every Day is a blessing here in Bucerias Mexico and the Banderas Bay.  This sunset on Tuesday evening overlooking the Banderas Bay to the Marietta Islands was absolutely spectacular, again! With the Christmas holidays coming towards us quickly, Bucerias Mexico nonprofit groups are getting their groove on with fundraisers to generate presents for the kids and monies and food that will be donated to families helping to create happier holidays and life throughout the year. I will say that feeding people is one of the most important things we can do to help another human being. Food is necessary for not only physical health, but also mental health and emotional stability.

Another wayone can help when flying down from Canada; West Jet allows 1 extra suitcase per person for humanitarian aid.  What is needed right now is gently used clothing for children and adults and school supplies. There is an orphanage in Valle that was recently opened with 188 children of all sizes and ages could really use the donation of clothing. Clothing also goes to the La Fuente church and the Tercera Edad Senior Center in Bucerias. If you need a inexpensive suitcase for this try a second hand store. You can find one for around 6 bucks! And leave it in Mexcio! Please contact Sandi Nystrom who heads up the John Ozzello Memorial Food Bank. Sandi  would be happy to get your donations where you would like them to go.

Children’s Christmas Program A huge fundraiser will be held at the Drunken Duck on Mon, December 8, 2pm – 6pm supporting the 21st Bucerias Children’s Christmas Program with over 1200 gifts given every year. The program also hands out generously donated candy bags to all the children. Mothers and grandmothers are also gifted with Crown Royal bags filled with hotel type soaps, shampoos and lotions. Donation: $200 Pesos plus all the raffle tickets you want to buy! Food, drinks available plus a great band. Tickets: Yo Yo Mo’s Sports Bar 40 Ave. Mexico – Bucerias Jan and Jennie Roden: 322- 222- 5101 xmasinbucerias@gmail.com Visit the little Catholic church on the arroyo (east side of Carretera 200) at 3 or 4 pm on Christmas Eve (Dec 24) to see the distribution of the gifts! You won’t believe your eyes!! I was able to participate in this event and it was incredible!  It really is truly amazing.

Another fundraiser coming up for the John Ozzello Food Bank is the 4th Annual Chili Cook Off in Bucerias on December 10th. If you think you make a great pot of chili step up to the plate and enter your chili in this contest! This year the Chili Cook Off will benefit the John Memorial Food Bank. They will be supplying the tables and chairs, cups, utensils and napkins. All you need to do is bring your best chili Wednesday, December 10th to 62 Lazaro Cardenas. Please register now at TheBuceriasChiliCookOff@gmail.com.  There will also be live music by Brit and Esteban, and adult beverages to cool down those chili flames.

The Amigos de Bucerias A.C. does a whole heck of lot for the Bucerias community, and I wanted to expand on that a bit in this article this week. The Amigos de Bucerias, A.C. is a Mexican registered civil association composed of members called “amigos” which reside mostly in Bucerias and unite to make Bucerias a good place to visit, work and live.
Their Mission Statement:
The civil association Amigos de Bucerias, A.C., is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the quality of life in Bucerias, in cooperation with all residents, elected and appointed officials, business leaders and visitors.”
Some of the projects they work on are the Beach Cleanup, Recycling Program, Paws and Claws, Special Needs Fund, Street Lights and also help support the John Ozzello Memorial Food Bank. Other organizations they help out with are the Bucerias Children’s library, Biblioteca Rey Nayar, Human Connections, Manos de Amor (Bucerias orphanage) and the Tercera Edad Bucerias Senior Center.
The Tercera Edad Bucerias Senior Center has recently built a large chicken coop for eggs.  Here is a small excerpt from the amigos webpage written by Amigo president Ronnie Barker, “When President Cirino told us of his plans to have a hen coop, we said, sure, go ahead, thinking, aw, sweet. But he and his seniors had bigger ideas – much bigger ideas! Using the balance of monies raised from selling crafts at the market \the Mexican ladies cooking demos, they bought the materials and the seniors set to with a will – and during the heat and the humidity of the summer, that is really something. Even as they were building, they were already acquiring some stock – provided by Manny Venegas, really cute little Easter card type chicks all yellow and fluffy chirping around.” Read the rest of the article on their webpage link:
http://amigosdebucerias.org/featured/whats-happening-at-the-tercera-edad/) Since then the cute little chicks have grown up to be great egg laying hens, which means lots of eggs for people to eat!  Unfortunately, they had some issues with the last rain and lost about 60 of the now egg laying chickens due to an unfinished roof. Black plastic had been donated, but just could not hold up to the last heavy rain this November 11th. If you would like to find out how you can help the Bucerias Tercera Edad Senior Center or other projects, please contact the Amigos de Bucerias on their web site at AmigosdeBucerias.org. Their page is filled wonderful community stories, information on immigration, plates for your car and information to things that folks may need when coming to Bucerias Mexico. Cruise around and check it out. You too can become an “Amigo”. Join us at one of the monthly breakfast meetings at Ixta Restaurant every fist Saturday of the month at 9am, or send an email to amigosdebuceriasac@gmail.com  Cost for membership is 250 pesos.  Thanks for all you do Amigos!

BEACH CLEAN-UP PROJECT Riviera Nayarit and Bahia de Banderas Turismo Municipal are starting a program to clean the beaches and also have recreational fun afterwards. The Bucerias Mexico Beach Clean up begins this Saturday 29th at 8:00 am on the Bucerias Beach along the arroyo at the Kissing Bridge. We will be cleaning the playa,  and after will be having  fun with music, DJ’s , Football and Volleyball on the beach. If folks show up this could be a monthly event. You will see tables and shade tents or umbrellas set up. Hopefully this will turn into a monthly beach clean up. With the Ananda Yoga / Amigos clean up day on the second Saturday each month,  this would add to that and be very awesome! Please join in.

Bucerias Mexico Home Furnishings

& Katrina Collection

North of the river and the kissing bridge in Bucerias Mexico is where many of the  Bucerias Art Galleries are located. One of the first large and new buildings to be created back in 2008 on Lazaro Cardenas is the Jan Marie Boutique building.  Jan states, “It was an exciting time in 2008 when we designed the building to house the new Jan Marie Boutique Gallery. As it was on the busy corner across from Mark’s Bar & Grill we wanted to create an attractive building that would shine on Lazaro Cardenas and give Bucerias an elegant touch.”

Presently, in 2014, Jan Marie Boutique in Bucerias Mexico has grown into a beautiful Bucerias Home Furnishings and Antiques collector’s dream. Everything from beautiful larger pieces of home furnishings to all of the fun home accessories to create beauty and grace  in your home or Bucerias rental unit with style and an elegance.

This season in Bucerias Mexico, Jan Marie Boutique has a very nice collection of Katrina dolls and Dia di Los Muertos tableware just in time for the holiday. These will make a terrific splash on your dining room table, or a Katrina doll as a collectible gift for yourself or a friend.  They really are fun all year around!

Dia de Los Muertos and Catrina’s History

La Calavera Catrina (Dapper Skeleton, or Elegant Skull) is a 1910-1913 zinc etching by famous Mexican print maker, cartoon illustrator and Lithographer, Jose Guadalupe Posada. The image depicts a female skeleton dressed only in a hat befitting the upper class outfit of a European of her time. She is offered as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt, were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolutionary era. While the original work by Posada introduced the character the popularity of the La Catrina as well as her name is derived from the work by Mexican artist Diego Rivera in his famous 1948 work sueno de una tarde dominical en la Alameda (dream of a Sunday afternoon along Central Alameda).

La Catrina has become the referential image of Death in Mexico, it is common to see her embodied as part of the celebrations of Day of the Dead throughout the country; she has become a motive for the creation of handcrafts made from clay or other materials, her representations may vary, as well as the hat.  In Bucerias Mexico, Jan Marie Boutique has a lovely selection of Katrina’s this season.

Jan travels throughout Mexico  every year to shop for unique and one of a kind art pieces. The entire art selection at Jan Marie Boutique comes from Mexico artists. The Bucerias home accessories, such as beautiful colored lighting ascents, smaller sculptures (and full sized sculptures as well) hand blown glass ware and a variety of table ware, and so many other things of beauty that will make a statement in your home.

A New Bucerias Community Farmers Market

There is a new Bucerias community  farmers market in Bucerias this season on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.  It’s a bit different due to the fact all of the vendors are Mexican Nationals. The new market is called the Bucerias Monday Mexican Gourmet Market. Click on the photos to go to the photo gallery. Click on the links for more Bucerias information.
Check out the Bucerias Community Calendar for Bucerias community news, events and live music.

The Bucerias Monday Mexican Market
The Bucerias Monday Mexican Market is located at the Bucerias Art Walk Plaza, which has a very convenient Bucerias community location just south of Mark’s Bar and Grill at 62 Lazaro Cardenas. They open at 9am and close about 2ish.
The Market is organized by Christy Ann Beguesse, a long time local of Bucerias. She states, “Our goal is to bring you the best in Mexican Cuisine made from the freshest ingredients in the kitchens of our Mexican neighbors. My hope is that with your support we can assist our neighbors financially and unite the community with a better understanding of the Mexican culture.”

Christy also helps support many fundraisers for food drives for the Bucerias community during the year as well, coordinating with other nonprofit organizations like the John Ozzello Food Bank, and Tercera Edad, the local Bucerias senior center, especially during the hardest month of September. This month is also called “Septhungre”, due to the starvation problems here during that time. Any time you feel like donating foods, they can be dropped off at the Art Walk Plaza.
If you are a local national and would like to get into this market, contact Christy at TheBuceriasArtwalkPlaza@gmail.com .

All of the vendors at the Bucerias Monday Mexican Market are  full time Mexican residents of Bucerias. So many locals struggle through the summer to make ends meet, and of course, not just in Bucerias, but all over the Bahia de Banderas.
This Bucerias community market will continue hopefully into the summer months if there are enough local people to come and purchase products.

Delicious Mexican Cuisine
There are some very delicious foods being prepared at the Bucerias community Monday farmers market. All of the foods are homemade authentic Mexican cuisine. Serving up enchiladas, fruit waters, fresh frozen chickens and ducks as well, along with chicken and duck eggs too!, artisan cheeses, honey, flan, delicious juicy carnitas carved right in front of you with the tacos piled high for only 10 pesos, (delicious with all of the toppings) beef or mushroom empanadas (enjoyed the mushroom!) topped with chimichurri and salsas’ that are cooked fresh and hot at the table, and homemade tamales wrapped in banana leaves.
A woman sells homemade banana muffins and other muffins. These are the largest banana bread muffins I have ever seen. I suppose they are bread loaves, in the shape of a large muffin; I can attest that they are moist and delicious. There is a medicine / herb table as well. In the corner a local Mexican artist with paintings along with the art and crafts that are spread throughout the market makes the ambiance colorful and fun. Out in front by Pacific Boutique Properties is a very nice selection of jewelry at terrific pricing, and delicious nuts…all cooked in front of you, like the delicious sweet caramelized pecans.
Its nice to purchase form the Bucerias community nationals. Living here all year around, I do see the summer struggles. It is a long summer for everyone here on the bay, as most depend on tourists every winter. These folks do know how to live off of the land, having chicken and ducks, gardens and crafts of all kinds. They have learned how to survive (sometimes just barely) and it’s nice that they bring their delicious and authentic Mexican delights every week to the new Monday farmers market. I love all of the markets, another favorite being the huge La Cruz Sunday Market, who also supports many of the local nationals and their businesses.

The products are at Mexican pricing…which means low! When you purchase from these locals, you are sure to know that your money stays here in Mexico, and trickles down to their families. Come on over and check out the new Bucerias Monday Mexican Gourmet Market. I for one had no problem eating my way from booth to booth….Buen Prevecho!

Bucerias Community – The BBCC is for Everyone!

I love living in the Bucerias community on the Riviera Nayarit. The color of Mexico life makes all of my senses come to life. Bright colors abound together, ones I would not have considered wearing together in Colorado, but do now with much delight. The heart centered energy of the Mexican culture opens my heart also, their faith and love of family and life renews my spirit.
Click on the photos that take you to the photo galleries, and the links for more information.

Living on the Riviera Nayarit and owning websites allows me to help non-profit organizations get their word out and about. They must be truly non-profit to get my attention. There are so many ways to help the Riviera Nayarit communities.

During the winter season, many expats come down for the 5 or 6 months to enjoy the warm weather. These people help out immensely with all kinds of non-profit events in many ways. However, its summertime now, and non-profit organizations like the BBCC need our help.  The BBCC summer program for the children has just begun. Its really fun for the kids, and all of the teachers and volunteers are absolutely NOT paid in any way. I will be teaching the kids how to swim! and help out with the birdwatching classes .with Luis Morales from the San Pancho Birding Observatory, another wonderful non-profit organization.

The BBCC
The Bucerias Community has a community center, called the BBCC, or Bucerias (Bilingual) Community Center.  The BBCC was founded in 2007, and offers a central hub for all residents and visitors to the area who wish to make new friends, learn different cultures and know more about their neighbors and their way of life. This Bucerias Community Center is an activity center dedicated to cultural appreciation for peoples of all ages and nationalities. The BBCC offers a summer program for disadvantaged kids so they can come and learn new hobbies and skills. The Children have fun learning and experiencing bird watching with Luis Morales who heads up the San Pancho Birding Observatory, clay sculpture, guitar lessons, swimming lessons, art and yoga and dance, as well as learning English. There will be story telling and fun and games. The children’s summer program fun started this week, so it’s not too late to get your children involved for the Bucerias community classes.  Call the BBCC at 322-102-0382, or stop by to Calle 16 De Septembre #40 Col La Unidad. You may also email them at: BuceriasBilingualCenter@yahoo.com

In general, the Bucerias Community Center serves some 60% Expats and 40% locals.  Seasonally this changes but during October to April when the Bucerias Community Center classes and workshops and main fundraising events take place, we are supported by Canadians, North Americans, Mexicans and some European or other South American culture-seekers! Contact the BBCC today for class information, or find out the many different ways you can help to support the Bucerias Community. Thank YOU!

A Mexican Folklore Dancing Fiesta History

Mexican Folklore Dancing is an authentic Mexican dance expression that displays the colorful heritage of the beautiful country of Mexico. It is influenced by the complex history of Mexico, from the Spanish Colonial Period, the Mexican War if Independence and the 1910 Mexican Revolution.  It also has a unique mix of the Mexican Indian indigenous cultures in Mexico.
When you put it all together, it is now developed into an amazing beautiful dance with beautiful colorful costumes. The dancing itself portrays stories of the struggles and joys of Mexican life, their religious and cultural beliefs and the other festivals that they hold every year. The orgin of the Mexican Folklore dancing came from the Mesoamerican days, when the dancing was performed to appease the gods of the Mayas and the Aztecs. When the Spanish came to Mexico in the 16th Century, they brought the European style of dance like ballet, polka, waltzing and schottische, which heavily influenced the indigenous dancing.
Other conquests allowed the German, French, Italian and Spanish dances to mingle with the original Mexican folk dancing and out of that came three forms of Mexican folk dance. The first one is ‘Danza’, which is an indigenous ritual dance usually performed in religious and community settings.
The second is ‘Mestizo’, where the western influence came into play in the steps and the theme.
Then the ‘Bales Regionales’ or the regional dances are a dance form by each community. This dance is usually done in community and theatrical performances. Each state and region in Mexico  presents the Mexican dance form in a style that reflects its own unique customs and traditions.
Every Mexican community loves to celebrate life with dancing and parties. They love life, and expressing life with dance.
Come on down to the Bucerias restaurant Sonora a la Parrilla on your Bucerias vacation on the Riviera Nayarit  for a delicious steak cut just the way you choose,  a traditional Mexican Folklore Dance on January 20, and enjoy the show while you dine. After all, you are in Mexico!
