Delicious La Cruz Ice Cream at Huana

So have you tried the new La Cruz ice cream at Huana that opened in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle in mid December 2014, located on Delfin Street across from Philos Restaurant?

This La Cruz ice cream business is co-owned by two brothers Hugo and Rodrigo Medina. Hugo thought about starting an ice cream business in Guadalajara where he was born, but decided on La Cruz in Nayarit because he wanted a change of pace in his life and because of his love of surfing in the area, not to mention his love of good quality ice cream. Huana sells organic ice cream in several delicious flavors and sizes as well as a larger selection of regular ice cream. The brothers plan on developing new flavors on an ongoing basis such as lavender, peanut butter and green tea. You’ll notice the deep, rich flavors of Huana’s ice cream immediately as well as the texture which is smooth, icy and refreshing.

You can also buy home-made granola, (one of my personal favorites as it has large nuggets of cereal and isn’t too sweet), locally baked goods including brownies, grape juice, coffee, honey and beeswax candles.  The new cappuccino machine is now in so come on in for a fresh cup of organic espresso, cappuccino or latte. It is the eventual goal of both Hugo and Rodrigo to offer all natural, organic products ranging from ice cream, to coffee to produce. All the shop’s inside decor including counters, light fixtures and display tables will be made from natural and/or recyclable materials supporting the philosophy to reuse and recycle – thereby reducing environmental impact. So come on out and support Hugo and Rodrigo’s new La Cruz ice cream business Huana in downtown La Cruz Mexico!

The Best of Banderas Bay Entertainment – Bryan Savage


Banderas Bay entertainment is amazing during the high season! From rock to jazz to banda and everything in-between! If you have not had the opportunity to see a Bryan Savage concert you have been missing something very special indeed. Bryan has been playing the saxophone and flute professionally for about 40 years playing with big time musicians and vocalists like Al Stewart (Year of the Cat), The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Bonnit Rait and many, many others. Bryan was also awarded a gold record for his sax solo on Steve Martin’s number-one-selling hit single “King Tut”.  He is currently doing shows under his own name as well as  with The Banderas Bay Jazz Allstars in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit every winter in Mexico.
Throughout college he played in bands and felt that playing music was where his biggest interest was. After receiving his BA degree in finance Bryan decided to continue to play and his first CD was self-titled “Bryan Savage” and was released in 1992, which did very well on U.S. radio airplay. In 1996 Bryan was signed by one of the Virgin Records companies with six more CD’s to follow under his name. All of the CD’s have received tons of airplay in the U.S. as well as internationally, with “Catfood” and “Soul Temptation” doing the best, charting in the top 5 or better. Bryan has created many CD’s with other big names in the music industry and has gone on tour in many countries such as Japan, Germany, England, Scotland, Netherlands and Canada, and of course Mexico!

Bryan and his wife Michelle are from my neck of the woods in Colorado; Glenwood Springs, which is located in the Aspen / Roaring Fork Valley.  He and Michelle have been coming to Mexico since 1988, first to Cozumel for vacations, and then starting in 2005 to the Puerto Vallarta area. They purchased their second place on the playa in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle in 2010. Their first place was for only a month or so for “get-aways” during the Colorado winters. Now they are both quite happy to escape the cold winters of the Rocky Mountains and stay for 6 months.

Life changing events happen to all of us, and for Bryan it was in 2010 that he began not to feel well. They had been spending winters in Naples Florida at that time. Bryan decided to make an appointment with a doctor and cardiologist, who did an electrocardiogram and came out saying, “I’m going to call an ambulance to take you to the hospital”.  Bryan told me he did not think he ever had an actual heart attack, but later found out that he was very close to having a fatal one as they found nearly 100% blockage of the heart artery, that the doctors actually call a “widow maker”, as well as a couple of other arteries that were also blocked. Bryan immediately went in for a triple heart bypass open heart surgery. Bryan had always exercised a lot and eaten healthy, which doctors credited for his surviving. They blamed heredity factors on the heart disease.

The Banderas Bay Entertainment Scene

Luckily for all of us folks, and the Banderas Bay entertainment scene and along the Riviera Nayarit, Bryan’s life changing experience led Bryan and his wife Michelle with the decision that it would be more fun to spend winters in Mexico. Bryan stated, “I was planning on being off most of the winters while down here and continue to play the busy playing schedule back in Colorado for the summers, between playing with The Banderas Bay Jazz Allstars, as well as doing my shows that are under my name.”

Music is in Bryan’s blood, or could quite possibly BE his blood as he continues to create new original music each year. When he plays solo, Bryan puts on a terrific show with computerized accompaniments he has created which creates a rich full sound, complete with a light show.

For Banderas Bay entertainment at it’s best, jazz music from The Banderas Bay Jazz Allstars are amazing and are not called the “Allstars’ for nothing!
They put on an amazing performance with Chas Eller on keyboards, Steve York on bass and Lazaro Poey on drums / percussion and Bryan playing alto sax and flute. Bryan also enjoys playing private parties and events as well and packs the dance floors.

You can catch Bryan Savage solo concerts at Breakers Beach Bar for a special Valentine’s Day Sunset Concert in Bucerias, Sonora a la Parrilla on Feb 24th in Bucerias and at Oso’s Oyster Bar every Thursday in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle at the marina, and also plays at Los Arroyos Verdes throughout the season for the fun Sunday Pool Party they have.

The Banderas Bay Jazz Allstars are playing in Sayulita and Zen Garden (a wonderful venue) Friday, January 30th, (their second show there this season!), and Puerto Vallarta at the Red Room on Feb 7th, 20th, March 6th, 20th. They are also playing the 15th Annual San Pancho Music Festival, which is February 27, 28 and March 1st. They are not yet sure which day they are playing yet as schedules continue to unfold. Authentic Sayulita Surf Bar Km5 Surf Bar in Mexico

The only authentic Sayulita Surf bar around is the Km5 Surf Bar and Restaurant on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.
The actual location of the Km5 Surf Bar & Restaurant is just outside Sayulita on the  back way out to Punta Mita, about 8 minutes. This Sayulita Surf Bar and Restaurant has views of the ocean and is surrounded by the jungle. This authentic Mexico Surf Bar looks like a “surf shack” and has sand on the floors downstairs, and a large open upstairs for a terrific view of the amazing Riviera Nayarit sunsets. Conveniently located between the great surfing in Sayulita and  Burro’s, Km5 Surf Bar also has surf board rentals. Its perfect to swing on by and grab a protein smoothie to go, rent a board and off to Burro’s for a great surf day. Burro’s is nice  as its not a crowded as Sayulita, but be careful getting in and out of the water as there are plenty of rocks.

This Sayulita Surf Bar and Restaurant also has great food! They make fresh homemade pizzas, huge salads, vegetarian food like Portabello burgers with cheese and asparagus (sooo good), rich creamy smoothies, and they also have a full bar.
The Km5 Surf Bar and Restaurant is owned by local surfers. They wanted to create a fun and healthy place to come and hang out, enjoy a terrific meal and meet new friends. The Km5 Surf Bar also sells fun T-shirts, hats and cool stickers.
They also are helping to promote a couple of  non profit organizations that benefit the earth and its inhabitants.

Azulita
Km5 Surf Bar is part of an non profit organization named Azulita. They teach the rural towns all over the Mexican coast about what to do with the organic garbage, how to create composts and soil from the trash. The way they do this by is traveling and giving speeches to the people; teaching the people to use organic pesticides instead of using toxic chemicals  that kill the soil and the earth. The also teach them how to reuse plastic, and show people the big damage plastic and chemicals do to the earth when people throw these products to the  rivers and into the ocean.

Alianza Jaguar

Also, part of the organization The Alianza Jaguar/HOJANAY “Hombre Jaguar Nayarit”  who are an environmental group that works toward the conservation of the jaguar and its habitat, while trying to involve the community and spark social participation. There mission statement is: HOJANAY’s objective is to conserve and restore the health of the jaguar populations in the Sierra de Vallejo and Nayarit region by helping to maintain biodiversity and providing environmental services and education.”

They are located in San Pancho, and they protect the Jaguar from the farmers because the jaguar kills their cows. This organization teach the farmers how to reject the Jaguars and how to protect the cows avoiding any risk of attack instead of killing such an amazing animal as it is the jaguar. “From the Olmecs to the Mayas, the Jaguar was the pillar of Meso-American civilizations. A history of which, as Mexicans, we are very proud.”

This Sayulita Surf Bar and Restaurant has a lot going for it! Km 5 Surf Bar – Surfers Dream Realized in Mexico

Km 5 Surf Bar and Restaurant started with a dream and is now self realized in the Sayulita area on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.  One of the owners, David, tells us the story of  his journey, along with his close surfer friends,  who created the only authentic Surf Bar just outside Sayulita and 5 Km from Punta de Mita Burro’s Surf action, thus forming Km 5 Surf Bar and Restaurant.

This surf bar looks like a Surf Shack, with sand floors. It’s all about living the surfing dream on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico, and sharing it with others.

The Surfers Dream
“Everything started with the dream. After living in the city we decided to come down to the beach, to find what people think,  just like in the movies. I mean the kind of lifestyle we all want to have. What I am saying, is it’s all about being close to the ocean;  being able to surf every day, hang out with friends, be with our dogs, carrying  our boards, driving with no hurries, enjoying every moment of life, and getting close to nature again. We were forgetting what a sunset is, what being in the water means, and being around the animals in their own environment.

So, when we  find this place, where all of these things happen for real, and we realized that we had to make something in some way to share this feeling to other people. This is when we decided to follow our dream sharing this feeling by giving the people a place where they can enjoy themselves with an incredible view of the mountains and the view of the pacific ocean from the Km 5 Surf Bar and Restaurant  terrace, offering them the best food and drinks ……

Finding My Way to the Riviera Nayarit
I (David) am original form Cuernavaca Morelos, a beautiful town just 40 minutes south from Mexico City. I spent all my life there since I was 7 years old until my 26th  year.  After college, I decided to start creating and living my dream of living at the beach, and surfing all day. I bought an old jeep, adopted a dog from the street, and started on my journey to enjoy life. I took a flight from Mexico City to Puerto Vallarta. where I spent my first 5 months looking for job there. Then,  I came to the beautiful Riviera Nayarit.
I moved from PV to Sayulita, and then found a job at the Four Seasons in Punta de Mita, as the front desk agent.  I then moved to the beautiful town of  Higuera Blanca; that was at the end of 2006. I worked for the Four Seasons for 3 years until I decided to come back to Cuernavaca to earn money, so I could came back to the beach and start my own business, and obviously to keep surfing. So after 3 years I did it!  I came back to Higuera Blanca, finding friends that will share the same dream as mine.  (A photo of David at Km 5 Surf Bar top deck for sunset)

Finding Like Minded Friends
I found my good friends Rodo, Carlos and Tony in the awesome and amazing town of San Francisco Nayarit, also known as San Pancho.  Rodo, an amazing human being, with an old soul,  impressed me with such a mystic way of working in the kitchen.  Carlos and Tony, two young guys with a lot of energy and passion for creating new things; a well- rounded sort of good people, impressing people with  amazing kinds of cocktails and teas. I knew we were going to make such a great team together. These great guys are from Guadalajara, Jalisco, and fell in love with surfing and creating this dream together.

We decided to follow our dream together to share this with other surfers and people, being able to surf every morning and live the life of a surfers dream.   The most incredible food prepared by Rodo, looking out over the ocean, and of course offering  surf board rentals.  This is how the Km 5 Surf Bar & Restaurant was founded and created.

From all of us, Rodolfo, Carlos, Antonio and I (David) who are the owners of the Km 5 Surf Bar,  and we look forward to meeting you,  and enjoying your company at the Km 5 Surf Bar and Restaurant, and perhaps catching some morning waves sometime!”
